VVSlayer
A downloadable game for Windows
Ever played the classic Half-Life 1 mod "Vampire Slayer"? I recently did again and was wondering what it would look like in a modern engine. So, I threw together this prototype for Halloween.
If you don't know what it is: it's a "Vampire vs Vampire Hunter" team deathmatch/last team standing game. Very simple:
- slayers (humans) have guns and a stake (which they try to connect with the vampires hearts)
- vampires have claws (which they try to connect with the slayers' bodies)
Simple, but classic, multiplayer fun.
Can you play multiplayer?
Yes, kind of... You have to host yourself. Log in via Steam (when you launch the game it will appear as "Spacewar"), make sure you don't have any VPN or other blockers. Make sure your download region is the same for everyone you want to play with. And just host. Everyone else should just see your server in the "join game" window.
Can you play with bots?
No. Not at the moment.
What's actually in the game?
A tutorial level and a few maps for actual multiplayer action. None of them are really fleshed out or made specifically for the game. So expect a lot of bugs and other issues. Especially the high quality levels. You can easily get out of bounds or have your character fall where it gets stuck. More on that below.
In terms of features...
Slayers:
- 4 different characters/loadouts (you can switch out gear and perks atm, but that's for testing only (probably))
- a dozen or so weapons
- stake mechanic: aim for the vampires heart to kill them
- the classic "invincibility crucifix"
- motion tracker a la Alien
- UV light to track blood
- "Blessings": some perks, like extra HP, faster movement speed, more ammo... Will eventually work differently (like the "Godly Aim", which gives a permanent crosshair)
- "Blood Type": atm does nothing. Will eventually take over some of the blessing effects.
Vampires:
- 2 characters
- leap ability
- wall crawl (veeeeery much prototype... bugs a lot)
- vision modes
- default vampire vision: see well in dark, but are sensitive to light
- prey imitation: see how humans see the world
- blood vision: highlights blood sources
- enhanced senses to track humans: atm there's only a simple "wallhack ability" based on a bats sonar, which will highlight player through walls. Later on this should become several "enhanced sensing abilities": hearing, smelling, and such.
- "Curses": does nothing yet
- "Bloodline": determines the passive ability, like faster resurrection, more HP.
Server Settings:
You can play around with some balance settings in the create game screen. Stuff like "Vampire HP scale", "Vampire movement speed" or "EasyStake (=> this means you don't have to hit the heart to kill a vampire, but touch the body just anywhere (not sure if it works properly because ragdolls only sync along the chest bone)).
Game Modes:
The game only has a Last Team Standing game mode.
What else... bugs. Reminder: this is a prototype.
Some important bugs:
- Key bindings may reset or be incorrect.
- Getting stuck in geometry or falling out of bounds: for this you can press "0", which will teleport you to your spawn. Don't abuse it.
- Ragdoll disappears, which causes a soft lock/game freeze. Not sure why... Probably requires you to reconnect or wait for the round to be over.
- Changing teams between rounds may cause some issues?
That's all for now. R.I.P.
